Ranger Report January-February 2015
Ranger : Franky
Rainy season... always a promising time for some of the best sightings the green and joyful South African bushveld has to offer.
It's early morning on 21-01-2014, we are packed and ready for the day. As the guests of Crocodile Kruger safari lodge approach the open game drive vehicle, I can see the excitement on their faces and they are probably wondering what they will see today.
About 3km's from the Crocodile bridge gate, the Kruger National park welcomes us with the first of many amazing sightings of the day. Not far from the road we spot about twelve lions, it is the Vurhami pride... Three of the elder female lions were resting in a Jackalberry tree while the youngsters were busy entertaining themselves under and around the old tree, but still making sure that they stay close to the rest of the pride. Today is the fourth time that I spot them at this tree.
After a long while of admiring, we had to move on to find out what the bushveld had in store for us next. It was a perfect start of the day and it just got better...
So far we were very lucky and although we did not see the cats every time, we still had some great sightings every time that we went on a game drive.
The rest of the highlights on the last couple of game drives are as follows:
On 23-01-2014 I only had two guests with me, but we spotted 4 of the big-5 that day, including a fascinating sight of a leopard at Biyamitie loop about 6km from road S113 heading towards S114 . The leopard was only about 10m from the road.
On Tuesday 14-02-2014 it was raining very hard and the earth was soaked. But we still managed to find 4 of the Big-5, including a big male lion about 400m north of road S25 not long after we entered through Crocodile bridge gate.
On 15-02-2014 we had the privilege to see a group of wild dogs on road H3 at "Berg en dal" turn off.
We also found a leopard walking in the road at Stevenson memorial.
We found about eight young male lions about 2km's south of the S25 on S114. They were all lying in the road, so we had to turn around and take an alternative route to our destination.
